The Mercon LV works adequately if serviced at the regular recommended intervals. Amsoil low viscosity ATF is a full synthetic and I believe will provide superior protection to the Mercon. Redline D6 ATF is another synthetic which on paper would appear to be the best choice for eliminating the cold weather shift flairs that the 5r110 is prone to. With how finicky these transmissions are and the manual specifically stating Mercon LV fluid only I would try your best to get the Ford stuff Edit: Sorry just saw you said 6r80! Those are much less finicky and should be fine with similar fluid
